beneath seattle

                                                                                        untitled
lo! darkness bends down like a mother of grief
on the limitless plain, and the fall of her hair
it has mantled the world.

It stays with you, this strange fey place...in night sweats and
fog-bound dreams. Dark magic and sorrow live within its
broken rooms and shattered corridors.
The path on which we walk is worn, free of dust; a few feet
to either side, heavy layers of dusty grime cover shop windows,
splintered steps, wood and stone. Thick cobweb curtains hang
from post and cornice like fragile linen frozen in stasis. Scattered
like tinker toys, curious stairways wind upward into darkness. The
air, close and still, tastes of age, earth, methane, and something
else...acrid, alien, unnamable.
Around us, burnished yellow light flickers on decaying walls,
casting deep shadows that hold strange figures which move
in darts and fits; pale faces glimpsed, then lost.
We speak softly here; our whispers echo, changing as they
fade, caught by lost souls briefly given voice before falling mute
again.
A story has been forming...its roots begin in this place, touched
by fire and plague, and lead to another, darker realm.
I feel it growing, slowly taking form...

phosphorescent skylines & vermillion spores

                                                                                    apparition
Imagination is more important than knowledge.

albert einstein

listening to:
yann tiersenla valse d'amelie

...:: * ::...

One of the many reasons I love reading Jeff VanderMeer:

"At night, only half the street lamps in Ambergris worked,
but all across the skyline phosphorescence dripped and
bled and hazed in and hazed out again. Sometimes, a
cloud of vermillion spores would form in mid-air and settle
down over a building, stretching across its bricks or wood
or stone like a second skin, before moving on or dissipating.
In one extreme case, Finch had seen the spores take on
the form of a huge, bloated green monster with spiraling
red eyes. It had bellowed and dived down into a neighbor-
hood to the north, smashing itself into motes against the
ground.
                                         . . .

Strange things sometimes flew between the two towers,
and sometimes the sky there was not the same color.
Sometimes, during the day, a night sky with unfamiliar
stars hung like a draped cloth between those towers.
Seeing something like that too many times altered you.
He didn't ever want it to become ordinary."—JV
I also find his manic glee in recently discovering Battlestar Gallactica
delightful.
Okay, yes. He's a bit late coming to the party, but the guy writes
like a crazed siren on ecstasy. I can forgive him many things.
